Las Vegas’s Oldest Casino Reopens After Major Renovation

The iconic downtown Las Vegas Golden Gate casino reopened on Aug 25 after extensive renovations. The casino was closed for five days between Aug. 20 to 25 to finish the expansion work.

The 111-year- old casino resort has been expanded significantly with the casino floor doubled, an extended outdoor bar and an eye-catching 360-degree 24-foot television tower stylized as a fountain. A large spiral crystal chandelier has also been put up near the new casino entrance which is just off the Fremont Street Experience site.

The project also included a total upgradation of interiors like the fixtures, a new carpet, as well as renovation of the restrooms and a new location for its loyalty card signups.

In a statement Derek Stevens CEO Golden Gate said

Since opening in 1906 as Hotel Nevada, Golden Gate has played a key role in the growth and success of Downtown Las Vegas. We are thrilled to continue Golden Gate’s incredible narrative and evolution, while also contributing to the area’s ongoing revitalization. This old-meets- new design creates a thrilling nostalgic feel evoking the spirit of the Rat Pack era with the excitement of our modern world

Stevens thanked Councilman Bob Coffin of Las Vegas City Council for his support on the project. This is the second major expansion undertaken in the past 50 years for Las Vegas’ oldest casino. The earlier renovation project was completed in 2012, which included the development of a five-storied hotel tower, along with a updated lobby and exterior.

This time around the gaming area has been further increased with almost 100 new slots being added. The property’s popular OneBar has been extended by 20 feet and will now be one of the longest bars in Las Vegas. The bar will continue to feature its characteristic frozen drinks, external televisions and entertaining bartenders. The renovation has also given Golden Gate an entirely new entry façade facing Fremont Street.

Featuring dazzling velvet drapes that create a dramatic entry point from the Fremont Street Experience, the casino entrance will evoke a vintage Vegas glamour. The design has been inspired by the Jazz Age and the drapes will have gold medallions, which enhance the experience while entering the casino’s lobby. The firm did not make any comment regarding the cost of the renovation.

Stevens also pointed out that there was another project underway in Fremont Street and close to Golden Gate. The project involves the demolishing of the Las Vegas Club and the construction of a new casino resort.
